This is not your typical Family Tree, but it is a family none the less. The German Biergarten Family is made up of a few permanent cast members and a host of ongoing International German Citizens working in their home away from home, The Germany Pavilion in Epcot. The permanent cast are full time employees of the Walt Disney World Resort and act as role models for the ever changing arrivals and departures of the International cast members. These international cast members are under contract for one year with the possibility of extending for an additional three months. In that time they learn every aspect of the Biergarten restaurant including what we call outdoor foods (The Sommerfest Restaurant, the Bierline and the Pretzel Cart). They are Immersed in the Disney Culture with specific attention paid to Safety, Proper Food Service and Diversity. They are enthusiastic about sharing their German heritage and I was grateful to be one of their leaders.
Biergarten Folklore: The Biergarten is the main attraction in the Germany Pavilion. Here we find ourselves in a village within the village, where, no matter what time we arrive, it is autumn night in Bavaria. A working waterwheel and trees in fall colors lend outdoor atmosphere to this magnificent hall. Beer is served in full-litre steins along with traditional Bavarian entrees - Sauerbraten, Roast pork, and sausages. Servers are costumed in Black Forest dress. From tables at four levels, we can watch performances of traditional dance and song. And, no matter how weary we may be, the band rouses us to our feet for waltzes, polkas, and the Chicken dance. The Biergarten, like the Oktobefest which inspired it, unites all comers in celebration.
